Umpqua Tailgater Review & Test – Will Ezell: Every season, new fly fishing gear and tackle floods fly shops and the online world hoping to grasp the attention of anglers and customers. As a fly shop, we recognize it’s hard to differentiate between the plethora of angling gear choices. So, we put the gear in the hands of those that demand the most and the best, our WCA Fly Fishing Guides. We picked our top new products in the WCA Fly Shop for the 2016 Fishing Season. We placed those items in the hands of our guides to wear, use, cast, fish, abuse and enjoy! Simply put, it’s gear that is WCA Guide Tested.
Starting his second season at WorldCast Anglers, Will Ezell spends a lot of time traveling to new areas and pieces of water. Whether he is in the Smoky Mountains or greater Jackson Hole region, Will has his gear in tow and the Umpqua Tailgateris the perfect tool!
“The Umpqua Tailgater has been the best tool that I have used for personal organization. Without it, the trunk of my car would be in complete chaos. With its many pockets and straps, I am able to keep everything in one place. It is also great to have a fly patch of the side to keep any loose flies that become scattered throughout a fishing season. The Tailgater does not take up very much space in the trunk.
Having the container in the middle, with all of the pockets and straps on the outside, is the perfect place to put larger items. I have been keeping my waders and boots in that area and my anchor also fits nicely on top of these items. From a non-fishing perspective this area could be used to hold jumper cables and straps that might be lying loose in a trunk. Keeping track of the large items in my trunk has saved me a lot of time loading and unloading at busy boat ramps.
The pockets provide ample space to store fly boxes and extra tippet and leaders. Having everything that I need for a day on the water in this container has been a day saver on many occasions. The easy access to pockets and straps has made keeping up with these small items a breeze. Knowing that I have the proper extra gear in my trunk has taken a lot of stress out of my pre-departure routine.
Being organized throughout a guide season is not easy, but the Umpqua Tailgater has been the tool that has kept me and my car organized. The bottle opener is also a useful addition. Having everything organized before you get on the water in this container saves you time that can be spent on the river. The durability of the Tailgater stood up to a season of guiding and it shows no sign of breaking down. The Tailgater is the best preparation tool that I have at my disposal!”
