Holbox Tarpon Club – Mexico Tarpon Fishing: The Holbox Tarpon Club is located on Isla Holbox, directly off of the northern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. The Holbox Tarpon Club is the only fly fishing outfit on this small, peaceful barrier island, providing a pleasant, low pressure fishing experience. Holbox Island draws wide praise as being on the world’s most spectacular trophy tarpon fisheries. The Holbox Tarpon Club is owned and operated by the infamous Alejandro Vega Cruz, or better known as “Sandflea”, who has guided his home waters for over 24 years and has become world renowned for his knowledge and abilities.
Located in one of the most productive year round tarpon habitats in all of the Caribbean, Holbox has access to both trophy migratory open water tarpon and sporty juvenile tarpon in sheltered back lagoons and beachside flats. May through Augus marks the trophy tarpon season as these amazing sportfish make their annual migration to these waters. The larger, migratory tarpon weigh anywhere from 75lbs to 200lbs, making Holbox one a few places where one can realistically hook into the fish of a lifetime. The smaller, juvenile tarpon are found in the shallow mangrove lined lagoons and flats that lie between Holbox Island and the Yucatan Peninsula. These resident tarpon are present year round and make for some amazing sight fishing. Along with resident snook, these smaller fish are a blast as fishing to them involves accurate tight loops into intimate pockets under overhanging mangrove branches. In addition to tarpon and snook, one can also find the periodic bonefish, barracuda, snapper, permit and jack crevalle.
A typical fishing day begins early at roughly 5:30 AM. Depending on conditions, a fishing day usually lasts up to eight hours including a lunch on the water but extra time can always be arranged. One is typically off the water between 3:00 and 4:00 PM allowing for some much appreciated beach or pool time during the hottest hours of the day.
The Holbox Tarpon Club does not supply lodging but is very familiar with the multitude of hotels on the island that cover the entire spectrum from cheap and simple to elegant and firstclass. WorldCast Anglers along with the Holbox Tarpon Club will arrange the lodging that makes the most sense for each anglers’ interests. Isla Holbox is blessed with some great restaurants with some very unique cuisines, offering classic mexican cuisine and multiple European options that are a result of a historical Italian presence on the Island.
Apart from the world renowned tarpon fishing, Holbox offers some of the best seasonal whale shark diving in the world. The island is a true beach town with a beautiful sand shoreline that is perfect for families looking to soak in some Caribbean sun but avoid the busy tourism of Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum. The outstanding Mayan ruins at Ek’ Balam and Chichen Itza make for a wonderful full day trip for a family or fishermen looking for a day off the water. If you are serious about catching a trophy tarpon and experiencing the wonderful cultural environment of Caribbean Mexico, the Holbox Tarpon Club is an essential experience. It is also a wonderful, family friendly island that is perfect for larger groups in which only a couple members are interested in fishing.
